Assist – how do I tone down a fallen travertine backsplash;

by @ 5:13 am on 05/30/2011. Filed under Tiled Backsplash

We simply installed a 4 x 4 mosaic tumbled travertine (cream & tan) back splash in our kitchen.

We love it, however the contrast of the cream stone vs. Tan stone is more dark than we it expected – - and it reminds me of a checker board pizza parlor.

I would like to tone it down with no tearing it out and beginning all over. I’ve attempted to live at another’s expense-paint the more dark tile to lighten it up a bit, however all of the patterns look precisely like that…
Painted. I simply want it to be clean, natural traditional looking.

Some ideas of one more way or product i have the ability to use to make a more uniform look?

Btw…
It has already been grouted and sealed.

Thanks for your assist!

    This is a tough, natural stone is absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately there is very little consistency between samples and installed products, so I agree with you!

    It would be a shame to rip the tiles, so I have a couple options for you. . .1. High gloss finishes will enhance colors and contrast your situation, so it will take a piece of work, but you can tape sealing off and then install a sealer with a matte finish, which can voithisei.2
    If you’re up for the challenge, you can chip the existing grout and re grout with a color that is in tone of light and dark colors tile. By choosing a grout color in the mid-tones that will help reduce conflict and thereby minimize the checker board pattern in plakaki.3.

    The third option is to change some of the decorative elements that surround the tile to shift the focus from the tile into something more dramatic. Start by choosing a really bold color features such as red, turquoise, orange or green living, and then find 3 good sized decorative objects in this color (art, sticks / branches, baskets, vases, small) you can put in visually prominent position in the room.

    The trick to this is to make sure the data is the first thing you see when you enter the room to overpower the tile pattern. This strategy is more effective when everything else in the room is a monochromatic palette, so if the painting is a possibility to choose one of the subtle colors in the tile to paint the rest choro. Elpizo that helps, it is difficult to provide specific solutions for the design problems we see pictures of the room!

    I painted mine with latex paint thinned with water, and then sealed it.
